BRIDGTON — Riva Sazama has joined the cooperative of artists who show and sell work at Gallery 302, 112 Main St.
Sazama’s work with copper combines her love of sculpture with painting, and has provided her with a most perfect and satisfying way of fulfilling both needs at once. Process has been an essential component in Riva’s art-making, and there is an extensive process involved in working copper.
Copper sheets are essentially painted with various patinas. With the copper, she is able to use hand tools to shape and form the surface with texture, lines and patterns. Over this surface, many layers of patinas are applied which react to the copper metal to create the coloration. Some of the patinas take days to fully develop and mature.
Sazama and her husband moved in 2015 from Alaska to Maine. She has been creating art for more than 20 years and received two degrees in fine art. In 2002, she finished her bachelor of fine arts degree with a focus on sculpture and painting from Johnson State College in Johnson, Vt. She also earned a master of fine arts degree in sculpture from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, in 2012. She has consistently worked with two- and three-dimensional pieces since she first began studying and creating art.
Sazama’s artwork is on display at Gallery 302 in Bridgton.
