RUMFORD — A picture-perfect day on the course led to a clean sweep for Maine Coast Waldorf School at the Class C Nordic skiing state championships.

The dynasty continued for Maine Coast Waldorf — which was previously known as Merriconeag Waldorf — on Friday at Black Mountain Ski Resort. The girls’ team won its sixth consecutive Class C title, while the boys’ team won for the fifth year in a row.

“We’re a really young school, but Nordic is our only winter sport, and so anyone who wants to play a sport pours in all their effort to Nordic,” senior Fiona Ahearne said.

Both teams were paced by individual champions on the second day of competition. Ahearne cruised to the girls’ 5-kilometer classical title a day after winning her second-consecutive individual freestyle tile.

Junior Tucker Pierce had a slightly closer finish in the boys’ 5K classical to sweep both disciplines.

“This is one of my favorite races of the year. States, you get super psyched,” Pierce said. “My good friend, Willson Moore … he’s very even with me. I guess I ended up on top this go-around, but it’s very fun to race against him.”

Moore, of Waynflete, finished 28 seconds back of Pierce, who had a winning classical time of 16:39.5 on the three-loop course.

Ahearne set a pace that was more than a minute faster than teammate Olivia Skillings, completing three laps in 19:21.8.

“She’s been really close to me all season, and she’s beaten me a couple times,” Ahearne said of Skillings. “So definitely it was not a given, and I was a little nervous.”

The Maine Coast Waldorf girls ran away with the team title as much as Ahearne did the individual. The champions scored a combined 54 points across the two days. Madawaska and Kents Hill tied for second place, with 102 points apiece.

The Maine Coast boys had a much closer victory, scoring 89 points to edge out runner-up Fort Kent by just four points.

Dirigo finished fourth in the boys’ team title race, scoring 181 points to finish behind third-place Orono. Telstar was fifth.

The Cougars were helped out by a sixth-place finish in both freestyle and classical from Keenan Martin.

“It was very surprising that we finished this well,” said Martin, who noted that sixth place was his best finish in the event.

The top local girls’ finisher was Telstar’s Carla Boyle-Wight, who took home fourth both days.

“I was pretty happy about it,” Boyle-Wight said, despite what she called “difficult” conditions. “It was not I what I was wanting, I wanted to podium, but I tried my best.”

The Rebels were sixth as a team on the girls’ side, finishing one spot behind Monmouth. The Dirigo girls were eighth and Winthrop ninth. Monmouth had two finishers in the top 10 for classical, in Rebekah Bryant (eighth) and Madison Bumann (10th).

Boyle-Wight’s Telstar team was given the Class C girls’ sportsmanship award.

“I was kind of hoping for it,” Boyle-Wight said. “We try our best to cheer on everybody. We have friends on pretty much every team.”

Dirigo and Winthrop tied for the Class C boys’ sportsmanship award.

“It just shows that we’re really friendly, I guess,” Martin said. “We all love the sport, we just want to support everyone.”

Even the perennial champions from Maine Coast Waldorf got some love from the opposition on a day that the titles stayed with the Freeport school.

“Oh they’re fast,” Boyle-Wight said. “We haven’t raced against them all season, so when they came we were like ‘oh no…’ But it was pretty awesome to have the competition.”
