LEWISTON — A Sabattus man accused of beating of his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend, threatening him with a rifle, and assaulting her in September 2015, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to felony charges stemming from that event.

Andrew Breton, 21, was indicted earlier this month by an Androscoggin County grand jury on three felony charges, including aggravated assault, punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Each of the charges of aggravated criminal trespass and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon is punishable by up to five years in prison. A misdemeanor assault charge carries a maximum jail sentence of 364 days.

Breton had been released from Androscoggin County Jail after posting $1,000 cash bail in September, but that money was later returned to him, and he is free on personal recognizance, Assistant District Attorney Kate Bozeman said.

Breton appeared Wednesday on the Unified Criminal Docket in 8th District Court, where a judge ordered him to have no contact with the two victims in the case, nor to possess dangerous weapons. The judge also allowed for random searches for weapons.

Livermore Falls police said they received a nighttime call that people were screaming and running down Church Street, also known as Route 133. Police also responded to a report of a domestic violence assault on Munsey Avenue, where the officer found people returning to the home and the assailant gone.

Both victims identified Breton as the assailant, police said. The man was taken to Farmington Hospital by ambulance.

Police said in a report that Breton entered the home of his ex-girlfriend and started beating her boyfriend. Breton threatened him with a rifle he had grabbed at the house. The gun had a loaded clip in it, but there was no bullet in the chamber, police said.

The woman tried to distract Breton so her boyfriend could get away, but Breton hit her, grabbed her by the throat and placed her against a wall, police said.

The boyfriend tried to leave the house several times, but Breton stopped him until the woman cornered Breton.

Breton was found later in Sabattus and arrested.
