AUGUSTA — Rangeley waited five years to be a longshot with nothing to lose in the Class D boys’ basketball quarterfinals.

The Lakers wore that label well on Saturday afternoon. They didn’t give undefeated, overwhelming pre-tournament favorite Valley a scare, but they gave them a game.

No. 1 Valley led by only six points after the first quarter and a dozen at halftime before squirming away to a 62-33 victory at Augusta Civic Center.

Cody Laweryson hit two 3-pointers in the third quarter and scored 14 of his game-high 23 points in the second half for Valley (18-0), which will face Greenville at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in the semifinals.

Collin Miller added 11 points for the Cavaliers after being held to three in the first half. Valley used a 17-6 gain in the third quarter to extend a 25-13 halftime advantage.

Kyle LaRochelle scored 10 points to lead Rangeley (8-12), which knocked out defending champion Forest Hills in a preliminary game to earn its first quarterfinal berth since 2011.

Ricky Thompson added seven points and Carl Trafton six for the Lakers.

Greenville 70, A.R. Gould 28

AUGUSTA — The traditionally tight 4 vs. 5 quarterfinal in the Class D boys’ field was anything but closely matched.

Greenville stormed from the gate, holding A.R. Gould of South Portland to four points in the first quarter of a 70-29 semifinal rout.

Nick Foley drained four 3-pointers in the first half and finished with 22 points for the No. 4 Lakers (14-5). Connor DiAngelo added 17, including nine in the third quarter to increase a 35-15 margin to 55-20. Tim White chipped in 12 points.

Tyrese Collins topped A.R. Gould (10-9) with 13.

Seacoast Christian 52, Vinalhaven 51

AUGUSTA — Tim Yeaton’s basket with six seconds remaining hoisted No. 3 Seacoast Christian to a thrilling 52-51 Class D boys’ quarterfinal victory over No. 6 Vinalhaven.

Yeaton scored 8 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter for the Guardians (13-6). Caleb LaCroix chipped in 12 points and Sky Archer added 11.

Cody Hamilton and Keon Arey each scored eight points for the Vikings (11-8) ijn the wild fourth quarter. Hamilton concluded with 18 points, Arey 14 and Lewis Cray 13.

Medomak Valley 62, Lawrence 44

AUGUSTA — No. 3 Medomak Valley trailed by one point at halftime before racing past No. 6 Lawrence, 62-44, in a Class A North boys’ quarterfinal.

The Panthers (16-3) pulled ahead by six, 36-30, at the end of the third period, then outscored the Bulldogs by a 26-14 margin over the final eight minutes.

Cameron Allaire scored eight of his 21 points in the fourth period. Nick DePatsy delivered five of his 10 in that span. Brandon Douglas finished with 13 points for Medomak.

Seth Powers produced 14 points and Mason Cooper 12 for Lawrence (10-9). 

Brewer 50, Gardiner 34

AUGUSTA — Matt Pushard scored 19 points, leading No. 2 Brewer to a systematic 50-34 victory over No. 7 Gardiner in the Class A North boys’ quarterfinals.

Kobe Rogerson registered 10 points and Carter Smith nine for the Witches (15-4). Connor McGuire topped the Tigers (8-12) with 10. Brian Dunn had eight.

Oceanside 64, Messalonskee 51

AUGUSTA — Keenan Hendricks scored 21 points to push No. 5 Oceanside past No. 4 Messalonskee, 64-51, in the Class A North boys’ quarterfinals.

Sam Atwood and Nate Raye each scored 11 points for the Mariners (14-5). Nick Mazurek added eight points and 10 rebounds.

Hampden 63, Skowhegan 47

AUGUSTA — It was no surprise that Nick Gilpin started his fourth and final Class A North boys’ tournament for No. 1 Hampden with a bang. Gilpin erupted for 34 points in a 63-47 win over No. 8 Skowhegan.

Gilpin also had 10 assists and a dunk for the Broncos (19-0), whose lead was reduced to eight points in the third quarter. Cameron Barnes led Skowhegan (9-10) with 15. Isaac Witham had 11.

Class D Girls

Valley 31, Forest Hills 22

AUGUSTA — No. 7 Valley stormed back from a two-point first quarter to stun No. 2 Forest Hills, 31-22, in a Class D South girls’ quarterfinal.

The Cavaliers (9-10) avenged losses of 9 and 11 points to the Tigers (14-5) during the regular season. They were still down five at the half, 16-11, but outscored Forest Hills 10-3 in third period to take command.

Jordan Belanger boosted Valley with nine points. Haven Mayhew added seven, including 5-for-6 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. Kendra Sweet hit 3-pointers in the second and third periods to vault the Valley offense.

Caitlin Logston led the Tigers with 12 points, seven in the first quarter.
