LIVERMORE FALLS — The Regional School Unit 73 board was told Thursday night that the former Livermore Falls High School was sold to Area Youth Sports for $1,000.

Superintendent Kenneth Healey said the transaction was completed Jan. 19 and purchase includes the building but not the surrounding acreage.

The district has been trying to sell the building for several years. Healey said he will compute the costs of selling the building and present them to the board.

“It was less money than it was to maintain it,” he said.

Submitting resignations for the purpose of retirement were high school social studies teacher Susan St. Pierre, who has taught in the district for 32 years, and Livermore Elementary School kindergarten teacher Rebecca Poat, who has taught in the district for 31 years.

School Board Chairwoman Denise Rodzen said St. Pierre has provided the opportunity for high school students to travel to other states and to Europe.

Livermore Elementary School Principal Kevin Harrington said Poat was responsible for starting a program that brought parents into the classroom to read to their children.

In light of the recent 300 layoffs at Verso Paper Co. in Jay, Healey said he has invited an attorney to meet with the board at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, to explain the state’s funding formula and the potential impact the loss and the subsequent tax abatement may have on the district.

A special Community Health Needs Assessment Forum has been scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 17, at Spruce Mountain Middle School in Jay. It will address poverty and how it affects Franklin and Androscoggin counties, Healey said.

“It’s kind of the beginning of what could be big in the future,” he said. He has been working with neighboring RSU 9 in Farmington on such matters, he said.

An RSU 73 board subcommittee meeting has been scheduled with Jay selectmen for 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, to discuss that potential impact.

The next regular board meeting is at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, at the Central Office.
