LITTLETON — One woman was hurt and a horse was killed early Saturday morning when the car the woman was driving collided with the horse on Route 1.
Maine State Police said Saturday that 44-year-old Dawn Theriault of Littleton was driving north in a 2002 Lincoln sedan at about 12:30 a.m. when she struck a horse in the middle of the road.
The horse’s owner, Jessica York of Houlton, told police she doesn’t know how the animal escaped from its fenced area.
The horse did not survive the accident.
Theriault was taken to Houlton Regional Hospital with glass in her eyes and cuts to her face, according to police.
According to a previous story by the Bangor Daily News, this was not the first time York’s horses have escaped. Last February, according to a story in the BDN archives, a herd of 25 ponies broke loose from their pasture on Route 1 on the Houlton-Littleton town line and took to the open road.
York said then that the escape was out of character for her ponies, which she uses in youth programs on her Dowery Farm for area school children. At that time, no horses were hurt or killed.
