We are hoping to get some remembrances from Key Club alumni of all decades if possible. If you have a Key Club story to share or would like to be kept up to date on our celebration, you may email kchoate@lewistonpublicschools.org.

Thank you, we look forward to hearing about “how it used to be.” — Karen.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Safe Voices has a few spots left for our next Volunteer Helpline Training, which will be starting Wednesday, Jan. 20.

We are currently seeking local volunteers to help staff our 24-hour free and confidential helpline, which covers callers from Oxford, Androscoggin and Franklin counties.

Specifically, we need help filling the following days/times for our helpline, however, coverage needs do change from time to time, and there may be an opportunity for more evening shifts in the future.

Times that we need are Mondays from noon to 5 p.m.; Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Fridays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

If you are available to help volunteer during one or more of these times, we encourage you to consider signing up for our training.

Often times, the helpline is the first point of contact for people exposed to domestic and/or intimate partner violence. Helpline workers provide advocacy to survivors of domestic violence; assist in the creation of individualized safety plans; and help to identify additional community resources as needed, with support from Safe Voices staff.

Volunteers work from their homes, and generally cover the helpline for approximately five to 10 hours per week, based on their availability and the needs of our helpline coverage. A Safe Voices staff person is always available as a “backup” contact for the volunteer should questions arise.

Interested volunteers must be at least 18 years of age, should be sensitive to domestic violence situations, understand and be able to set clear boundaries, practice good self-care, be dependable and have good listening and communication skills.

Space is limited, and pre-registration is required. Training is free. All sessions will be held in Lewiston from 4:30 to 8 p.m.

The following six training sessions are mandatory before you can begin volunteering: Wednesday, Jan. 20; Monday, Jan. 25; Monday, Feb. 1; Wednesday, Feb. 3; Monday, Feb. 8; and Wednesday, Feb. 10.

For more information or to sign up for the training, contact Staci Beal by phone at 207-795-6744 ext. 214 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, or by email at sbeal@safevoices.org.
