AUBURN — Efforts to create a walkable New Auburn Village and a riverside greenway move into the next phase Thursday.

City officials are hosting a planning kickoff meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Auburn/Lewiston at 43 Second St. The meeting is open to the public.

The effort continues work started in 2011 with the New Auburn Master Plan that suggested creating a downtown village area and rerouting some traffic around it.

Work continued with 2014’s New Auburn Village Center and Transportation plan.

The most recent work calls for constructing a park and trail area along the Little Androscoggin River and redesigning Second Street to become a pedestrian-friendly street, lined with shops, restaurants and new housing. The goals are to increase property values, bring in investment, attract new residents and create an urban, walkable village center.

On Thursday, members of the Auburn planning staff and representatives from planning firm VHB Consultants will present information on the project and seek ideas and input from the public.

“The purpose of the public meeting is reacquaint folks with what’s been planned, what’s proposed and most importantly, to get people’s ideas on what they’d like to see New Auburn become,” City Planner Doug Greene, the project manager, said.
