1926 – 2015

BUCKFIELD — Frank M. Adams, 89, died peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 20, at his home in Buckfield.

He was born March 13, 1926, at the Adams Homestead in Bowdoin, the son of Herbert K. and Lydia M. Marshall Adams. He attended Adams School, a one-room schoolhouse, and Brunswick High School, graduating in 1944.

He served two years in the U.S. Army, including a tour of duty in Germany. He then attended the University of Maine at Orono, graduating with a bachelor’s degree.

In July 1959, he married Helen Alexander. He taught school in Calais, worked for the Department of Human Services and the Department of Corrections as a juvenile probation officer at the Maine Youth Center in South Portland. Following his retirement in 1986, he worked for several companies as a driver and courier. He also volunteered for Meals on Wheels.

Frank baled hay on the family farm in Bowdoin every summer. He also kept a few farm animals, including goats, pigs and chickens. He would frequently be seen on his tractor and working on his wood pile, getting ready for winter.

He is survived by daughters, Nancy Adams Downs of Lisbon and Jayne R. Adams of Buckfield; brother, Donald C. Adams of Harpswell; grandchildren, John Adams Downs of New York City and Emily Adams Downs of Portland; and his sister Alice’s children, Sally, Kurt, Rachel, Susan and Samuel.

He was predeceased by his wife, Helen; and sisters, Frances E. Adams and Alice A. Melcher.
