LIVERMORE FALLS — The Regional School Unit 73 board Thursday night scheduled a special meeting for Jan. 7 to discuss the impact of 300 layoffs at Verso Paper mill in Jay this month on town and school budgets.

The meeting, focusing on creating 2016-17 budget, is set for 6 p.m. in the Spruce Spruce Mountain Middle School cafeteria in Jay. Residents of Jay, Livermore and Livermore Falls are invited to attend and share their views.

Superintendent Kenneth Healey said he met with selectmen in Jay and plans to do the same with selectmen in Livermore and Livermore Falls to discuss budget issues.

In other business, the board said goodbye to longtime district administrator Wendy Moreau, who is retiring this year. She is assistant principal at Livermore Elementary School and has served as interim special education coordinator, among other positions.

“I want to thank Wendy for all she has done for the district,” Healey said. “If everyone was like her, my life would be so much easier.”

Moreau said the district was fortunate to have its staff.

Spruce Mountain High School Principal T.J. Plourde said an elevator has been installed at the school and inspected, and is now awaiting certification so that it can be used.

In January, the board is expected to consider a new policy governing the administration of medical marijuana in the schools. Healey said the nursing staff has reviewed the proposed policy.

Healey said the student population stands at 1,508, down slightly from April.

The next regular board meeting is Jan. 14, 2016, in the Central Office.
