KINGFIELD — A tractor-trailer hauling wood chips rolled over Tuesday when the driver swerved to avoid an oncoming car on Route 27 near the Carrabassett Valley line, Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr. said in a news release.

Cpl. Nate Bean and Chief Deputy Steven Lowell responded to the accident that was reported at 6:04 a.m.

Driver Nathan Clement, 56, of Corinth was not injured.

Clement, who was heading north, told deputies that a car “hugging the centerline” was approaching him, and he swerved right to avoid it and drove onto the soft shoulder the rig flipped and spilled the chips, Nichols said.

Clement was driving a 2007 Kenworth tractor-trailer and hauling wood chips for JD Raymond Transport Inc. of Dover-Foxcroft.

Kingfield and Carrabassett Valley fire departments assisted at the scene. The Maine Department of Transportation assisted with a small diesel fuel spill. 

Jordan Lumber Co. of Kingfield assisted in cleaning up the chips, and Collins Enterprise Towing and Repair of Wilton removed the truck.
