AUBURN — Auburn police said Black Friday shoppers gave them few problems.

“Black Friday went pretty smooth for us,” Deputy Chief Jason Moen said. “The crowds were manageable and overall well behaved.”

Auburn police made one shoplifting arrest at Wal-Mart during the rush, Moen said. “Other than that it was pretty quiet.”

Several stores opened at midnight offering deep discounts; big screen televisions and computers were among the top sought deals.

Two stores with big midnight openings hired off-duty Auburn police officers to ensure safety and crowd control.

“Wal-Mart hired four officers and Best Buy hired two,” Moen said.

Lewiston Police Department Lt. Mark Cornelio also said they had no issues on Black Friday at any stores.

The National Retail Federation reported that the average spending per person nationwide this Christmas season will be $805.65, compared with $802.45 in 2014. Almost half of holiday shopping, 46 percent, will be done online, up from 44 percent last year, the federation projected.
