JAY — Archie’s Inc. of Mexico will begin curbside collection of trash and recyclables at 5 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 2 and 3, depending upon where residents live.

On Wednesdays, pickup includes mainly streets south of Route 140 and in East Jay. Route 133/Franklin Road residents are also on the Wednesday schedule.

On Thursdays, the company will mainly pick up on streets on Route 140/Intervale Road and streets to the north. Notices were mailed to residents outlining the pickup schedule and process, and a schedule is posted at the Town Office.

The town has contracted with Archie’s with payment through taxation. There is no additional fee to residents for the service. The cost to the town is $120,000 for the year. It is expected to save the town $130,000. The sale of trucks linked to the Transfer Station will offset the cost of the first year.

The last day the town will pick up trash and recyclables is Wednesday, Nov. 25. There will be no collection on Thanksgiving Day or Friday, Nov. 27, Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere said.

Beginning Dec. 1, residents may use any trash bags they choose.

“Recycling is still mandatory and residents are expected to do their part in helping our environment and our budget by adhering to this, but clear bags are longer required,” LaFreniere said. “We will continue to sell the clear bags until our inventory is exhausted.”

Trash and recyclables can be placed curbside, in proper containers, after 4 p.m. on the day before pickup or the morning of collection. If a resident’s pickup day falls on a holiday, Archie’s will pick up on the following day that week, according to LaFreniere. Notice of this will be advertised and posted on the town’s website at www.jay-maine.org.

Also beginning Dec. 1, all residents using the facility are required to stop at the recycling building and speak with the attendant before unloading any material. All recyclable material, universal waste, batteries, antifreeze, used engine oil, electronic waste, devices containing freon, propane tanks and tires must be left at the recycling building. The only material deposited beyond the recycling building will be trash, clean and pressure-treated wood, brush, inert material such as bricks and cement blocks, and ashes and leaves, according to information provided by the town.

Residents also are required to display a free Jay Transfer Station entry permit sticker on the lower passenger side of the windshield.

Beginning on Dec. 7, the Transfer Station will be closed on Sundays and Mondays. The Transfer Station will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. The Transfer Station will no longer open earlier than the posted hours, LaFreniere said.
