The photos in the Sun Journal of the state champion Lewiston High School soccer team show most of the players are African-American. The photos of Lewiston’s opponents from Scarborough show a lily-white team.
According to Bruce Noddin, in a letter to the editor (Nov. 7), which town is racist and which is a model of the supposed liberal passion for cultural and racial diversity?
Noddin singles out North Yarmouth as an example of racial tolerance and social diversity. According to the U.S. Census, North Yarmouth is 97 percent white, with an African-American population of 0.2 percent, and a median income of $79,000. Yarmouth, white on the soccer field, has a population distribution of 95 percent white, 0.5 percent African-American, and a median income of $75,000.
Lewiston? The numbers are 87 percent with 9 percent African-American and a median income of $36,000.
The stench of hypocrisy from the enclaves of southern Maine country club liberals is overwhelming. The people of those towns hide in their gated communities and wealthy neighborhoods preaching an ideology they refuse to live. They are the real racists.
It is time for those towns to stop preaching and put up or shut up. They have no moral right to impugn Lewiston until they openly and publicly welcome asylum seekers and Somali immigrants to their towns.
Until they say, “You are welcome here. We will give you all the assistance you need, including a place to live,” those towns will carry the stench of hypocrisy so typical of wealthy, white liberals.
