The firm of Haskell & Hopkins, gentlemen clothiers of Auburn, are planning to move to Lewiston. Negotiations are now under way for the establishment of this firm’s store in 27 Lisbon street, which store was for years occupied by the Nash millinery parlors. H. M. Haskell of Auburn, and A. P. Hopkins of Lewiston, proprietors of this firm, opened their present store in 57 Court street, Auburn, about two years ago and have enjoyed an extensive patronage. Previous to this, Mr. Haskell had been in the clothing business in Auburn, but moved to the West, returning to re-engage in the trade.

Edward C. Horton Sr. of Witham Road, Auburn, picked up his telephone Thursday night and accepted a collect call from a son. He said he thought it was from a son in Portland and found that it was from another son, Edward C. Horton Jr., 21, who is stationed at the South Pole as an electrical technician 3/C. The young man left Oct. 10 with a Navy unit and eight civilian scientists for extensive study of wind, weather and other conditions on the 16.000 foot plateau beyond the South Pole. Horton said the conversation was carried on by radio and telephone. The radio beam was picked up by a radio ham, Rus White at Roanoke, Va., and then transferred via a telephone line to the Witham Road, Auburn. Horton said the conversation was carried on very clearly, with his son’s voice being received as would a normal telephone call within the city.

Though most of the proposed changes voters will be asked to approve Nov. 6 to the city’s charter are considered “housekeeping,” there are certain issues that disturb city councilors so much that not one of them is totally in favor of passage. Auburn Mayor Richard Trafton fully endorses the proposals, saying the two at-large councilors are needed to provide a more “city-wide” perspective and a less “parochial” flavor to the council.
