GRAY — An Auburn woman was critically injured when the car she was riding in struck a large moose on the Maine Turnpike on Wednesday night, Maine State Police Trooper William Baker said.
Taylor Norcross, 27, suffered head injuries and was in the Intensive Care Unit at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, the trooper said.
She was a passenger in a 2004 Infinity sedan driven by Frank Gatto, 40, of Auburn. He was not injured, Baker said.
Gatto reported on Facebook that Norcross was in an induced coma, and that medical staff in the ICU was monitoring swelling in her brain.
The bull moose was standing in the northbound lane at mile 65 where it was struck. It “went over the top of the car right over the passenger compartment. Basically, it took the roof right off the car,” the trooper said.
Norcross had to be extricated from the vehicle by Gray firefighters and rescue personnel, he said.
The moose died in the crash.
Maine State Police Sgt. James Urquhart assisted at the scene.
