FARMINGTON — A Jay man is accused of punching and kicking a fellow inmate Friday in the minimum security area at the Franklin County jail, Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr. said Monday.
Corrections officer Sgt. Walter Fails arrested Joseph L. Begin, 37, on a felony charge of aggravated assault on Sunday, Nichols said.
A conviction on the charge carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
According to Nichols, Begin and another inmate exchanged words and Begin threw him against a wall, assaulted him, threw him into metal tables and kicked and punched him, Nichols said.
Sgt. John Donald broke up the fight.
The victim was checked by the nursing staff and did not require any further treatment, Nichols said.
Begin was moved to maximum security.
Begin was arrested March 2 on three counts of felony gross sexual assault stemming from a March 2014 incident in New Sharon. One of the attacks required medical treatment, Nichols previously said.
Begin is being held on $25,000 cash bail in the sexual assault case at the Franklin County jail in Farmington.
