LIVERMORE FALLS — Regional School Unit 73 Superintendent Kenneth Healey told directors Thursday night that a curriculum coordinator is “absolutely essential” for the district.

“The goal will be to hire (a curriculum coordinator) to start in January,” he said.

The money to pay for the position will be the salary of Livermore Elementary School assistant principal and special education teacher Wendy Moreau, who is retiring in December.

“Then we’ll start fresh next (school) year,” he said.

He said some retirements are expected during the 2016-17 and savings from replacements will go toward the curriculum coordinator position.

Also, once Moreau retires, there will not be an assistant principal position for Livermore Elementary School, Healey said.

In other matters, the board authorized Healey to advertise the sale of the former Livermore Falls High School in local papers.

The town declined an offer to have the school.

Healey said the advertisement will run for 14 days in the daily newspaper and twice in the weekly newspaper. The ad will also be on the RSU 73 website. If no interest in shown, the district may list the sale with a Realtor.

“We don’t have to accept any of the offers,” he told the board.

He said the Area Youth Sports group has indicated an interest in the building, however, he questioned whether the group could pay pay the transfer costs to the state.

The district does not have money to continue maintaining the building, Healey said.

The building sits on 10.6 acres. There is a bus garage there the district will continue to to use.

If the building sells, Healey suggested the money be used to raze the former Livermore Falls Middle School, which closed several years ago.

The district includes Spruce Mountain middle and high schools in Jay, Livermore Falls Elementary School and Jay Elementary School.
