FARMINGTON — A local man accidentally shot himself in the leg trying to save a chicken from a dog Thursday afternoon at his home on Hardy Lane.

Donald Wright, 39, had a Glock 9mm pistol in his hand because he fired a warning shot to stop the dog from chasing his chickens, Sgt. Edward Hastings IV said.

Wright was trying to wrangle a chicken from the dog’s mouth when he accidentally shot himself in the calf, Hastings said. Wright and a female companion had the bleeding stopped when Hastings and primary investigator, officer Michael Lyman, arrived.

Wright was sitting on the porch waiting for a NorthStar EMS ambulance to arrive, Hastings said.

Wright was taken by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. He had a bullet hole in his leg but it was not considered life-threatening, Hastings said.

Unfortunately, the chicken died.
