For the second time this season, the L/A Fighting Spirit staked their claim to in-state dominance in the NA3EHL.
Colby Siering and Mike Heffernan each scored a pair of goals and Dylan Vrees added a goal and two assists to help lead the Fighting Spirit to a 7-0 win over the Wild at Biddeford Ice Arena on Wednesday afternoon.
Zachary Barry stopped all 16 shots he faced to earn the shutout, his third of the season in five starts. The Andover, Mass. native has allowed just four goals in five complete games.
Joseph Mooney of Kennebunk, playing in a rink with which he is very familiar, got things started for the Spirit in the first period, netting the game’s first goal at 14:45.
David Fish followed on a feed from Simon Corriveau at 15:44, and Vrees pushed the lead to 3-0 with 40 seconds to play in the first frame on a Siering assist.
Heffernan and Siering scored 46 second apart early in the second period to salt the win away, and they replicated the feat in reverse later in the second, netting goals 28 seconds apart to complete the scoring.
No one found the back of the net in the third period, though not for lack of effort. The Fighting Spirit peppered Wild goalie William Dunham with 38 shots in the final frame, though none went in. Dunham finished the game with 50 saves on 57 shots.
In two games against its in-state rival, L/A has outscored Maine 13-0, and the Spirit have outshot the Wild 116-30.
L/A next skates at home Saturday against the East Coast Minutemen at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston. The Spirit are back on the road again next Tuesday, back in Biddeford for a rematch against the Wild.
