CAPE ELIZABETH (AP) — A Cape Elizabeth gun club is going to remain open.

The Cape Elizabeth town council voted Wednesday to grant a conditional license to the Spurwink Rod and Gun Club. The town’s police chief suspended live fire at the range over the summer after a report found it unsafe.

The club will receive its license if a code enforcement officer certifies the range meets the town’s safety standards.

Club President Tammy Walter says they are about two-thirds of the way done with $25,000 in safety improvements and expect to finish a 25-yard range in December.

Live fire will stay closed until safety standards are met.

The club has operated for 60 years. It recently came under fire after people moved into nearby homes and complained about safety and noise.
