1941 – 2015

LEWISTON — John W. Walp, 73, of Jay died Sunday, Oct. 11, at Central Maine Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.

John was born in Portland on Dec. 10, 1941, a son of John and Mary (Welch) Walp. He graduated high school in 1960, and enrolled in the U.S. Army. While in the service, he was a military police officer stationed in Alaska. After his service, he began his career working at International Paper in Jay.

On Sept, 27, 1969, he married Catherine Moreau. After his retirement from International Paper 11 years ago, he and Catherine became snow birds and enjoyed living in North Fort Meyers, Fla., during the winter months.

John enjoyed being outside, particularly when he was on the golf course. He was undoubtedly a jack-of-all-trades; John was able to repair anything that needed to be fixed, whether it was a car maintenance issue, snowmobile or something in his home. He was an inventive man and a problem solver — with those skills, he and his wife built their home together in Jay. He was a reliable man and was always available to give a helping hand.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine Walp of Jay; his son, John H. Walp and his companion, Donna Butler, of Jay; grandsons, Brandon and Brady Walp, both of Jay; a brother, Carl Walp and his wife, Diane, of Windham; a niece, Karen Ahlert of Massachusetts; and nephew, Kevin Walp of Windham.

He was predeceased by his parents; and a sister, Joanne Huntoon.
