FARMINGTON — Ibrahim Achekh of Lewiston recorded a hat trick in the second half to guide the University of Maine at Farmington (4-6-2, 2-3-1) men’s soccer team to an 8-1 North Atlantic Conference victory over Green Mountain College on Sunday afternoon.
The opening half only saw one goal, scored off a throw-in by Luke Sterling of Auburn. Sterling stood next to the Eagles’ bench and launched a flip throw on goal. As Green Mountain keeper Samuel Nichols tried to corral it, the ball deflected off his hands into the back of the net.
Sterling also assisted UMF’s second goal early in the second half. Sterling dished a cross in the box to Yusuf Yama, who lined a grounder into the right side of the net.
Achekh recorded his hat trick in a five-minute span to blow the game open. Sterling added another assist by passing through the Eagles’ defense for the breakaway, and Achekh chipped his shot over Nichols. Yama assisted Achekh’s next two goals.
Achekh’s hat trick was the first by a UMF player since Jordan Hale accomplished the feat in a 7-0 win over Unity College on Sept. 28, 2010.
