DIXFIELD — There was a lot on the line Saturday as two of the top field hockey teams in Class C South clashed Saturday.
Sabrina Daoud and Katelyn Olsen each scored goals in the first half and goalie Morgan Morrow and the defense held firm once again to lead Dirigo to a 3-1 triumph over St. Dominic Academy on Homecoming at Harlow Park.
The win completed Dirigo’s third season sweep of the week.
Dirigo (10-1) scored the game-winner when it quickly reversed the flow of play on the field and Olsen drilled the ball past Saints goalie Abby Slonina (14 saves) to push the Saints to a 2-0 lead with 4:37 remaining in the first half.
”We came out with more intensity today,” Dirigo coach Gretchen Errington said. ”There was no way the girls were going to lose, because we had home-field advantage, and it was our senior day.”
St. Dom’s (7-4-1) was far from done after going down by two. When play resumed, the Saints immediately advanced the ball in to the circle. Kylie Leavitt dribbled in from the right side and passed the ball over to Callie Samson, who kept her stick swinging. The ball went airborne and settled in to the upper-left corner of the cage with 3:20 left.
”This was an up and down game ,” St Dom’s coach Brian Kay said. ”Dirigo came out with intensity, but they had chances and we had chances. We moved the ball in to the middle, but just didn’t finish.”
Daoud opened the scoring when a scramble in front masked the ball briefly. Her shot eluded Slonina on the short side with 12:07 left in the first half.
The Saints were unable to get by Dirigo fullbacks Katelyn Radcliffe and Haley Turner, who consistently rushed out to disrupt play. When shots by Hannah Trottier-Braun and Olivia Chase neared the target, Morrow (10 saves) kicked the ball away.
”As for making adjustments. We needed to get back in order to be in front of their forwards,” Radcliffe said. ”They have a quick transition game.”
”Defense is important. Defense wins games,” Errington added. ”That’s our focus going forward.”
Dirigo senior Lauren Henderson scored an insurance goal on a pass from Sophia Jacques 6:15 in to the second half. Dirigo also received solid play from midfielders Emma Lueders and Olivia Noyes.
”This is a young team, mostly freshmen and sophomores, just two seniors,” Kay said. ”We hope to see Dirigo again, be it in the MVC championship game or in the playoffs.”
