LISBON — Traffic was slowed on Route 196 in Lisbon after a bald eagle was injured on the road Sunday.

David Wyman saw the eagle before police arrived. He said the bird didn’t move after it swooped down to catch some prey, so he and his girlfriend made sure traffic stayed away from the eagle.

“The last thing we need,” Wyman said, “is somebody getting into an accident because they’re trying to take in the beauty of a bald eagle.”

Police said bystanders did the right thing.

“Teamwork is always important when we’re dealing with any situation,” Lisbon police officer Glen Darby said. “We appreciate all the help we get.”

The bald eagle was eventually taken by a state game warden. Wardens said the eagle is now at the Avian Haven Bird Rehab Center in Freedom. A specialist there said it was favoring one leg after it arrived at the rehab center.

The bald eagle is a federally protected species, but it is no longer endangered.
