The moose hunt is under way in far northern and northeastern Maine starting Monday. The session ends on Oct. 3. Three other sessions are scheduled for other parts of the state in October and November.

There is also a Maine “resident only” day in a limited part of the state on Oct. 31.

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife issued 2,740 moose permits this year. That is the fewest in 12 years. Biologists say parasites such as winter ticks are a threat to northern New England’s moose herd.
