I would appreciate receiving any information or anecdotes concerning LogistiCare from Maine residents (MaineCare members, families, friends) who have had to use the services of LogistiCare. Please contact me at jamestphillips@yahoo.com.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Hillview family development of Lewiston Housing Authority is seeking an enthusiastic volunteer sewing instructor to help lead our Aspirations Sewing program. While this program was previously attended by middle-school girls, who created projects for local fairs and the military, many boys have recently expressed an interest in learning to sew. Our youth are an energetic bunch who love fashion and would really appreciate a regular sewing program. For those interested adults who would like to assist in planning and leading weekly or biweekly sewing sessions and to be a positive role model to low-income youth, please contact Elaine Theriault, the Hillview Aspirations coordinator, at 207-783-8539 ext. 22 or at etheriault@lewistonhousing.org.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I know many catalogs have “scratch and dent” stores. Does Sturbridge Yankee catalog have one? — No Name, No Town.

ANSWER: Sun Spots contacted Sturbridge Yankee Workshop (207-774-9045 in Portland) and they replied that they do not have a scratch and dent catalog and they apologized for the inconvenience. If anyone would like to order one of their catalogs, which include sale items, send an email to info@sturbridgeyankee.com or send your request by mail to Sturbridge Yankee Workshop, 90 Blueberry Road, Portland, ME 04102. You can also view the catalog online at www.sturbridgeyankee.com/.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: We would greatly appreciate it if you could help us get the word out about a few special people who are waiting for a volunteer tutor to help them with their education. Some are struggling with day-to-day life due to their lack of reading, writing, math and English conversation skills. Others need to pass the GED (now HiSet Test) in order to train for a career or obtain a job.

There is a local woman who recently lost her husband of many years. With very low literacy skills, dealing with day-to-day tasks that require reading and writing is impossible. We also have a family in Minot that needs a tutor who can speak a little Spanish, a mom in Auburn with ADHD, and many adults who need help with GED math and writing. English conversation partners are also in high demand.

Volunteer tutor applicants must be 21 or older, have at least a 12th-grade reading level, and pass a 12-hour tutor-training workshop. Our next workshops will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 3 and 10, at the Auburn Public Library. There is still time to register. Call Tahlia at 207-333-4785 or email literacy@literacyvolunteersandro.org. Also, check out our website at www.literacyvolunteersandro.org/. Literacy changes lives. Thank you! — Tahlia Chamberlain, Literacy Volunteers
