1933 – 2015

HAMPDEN — Henry “Hank” L. Filliettaz, born March 14, 1933, the fifth child of Brig. Gen. Charles M. and Catherine F. (Conley) Filliettaz, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Sept. 22, at his home, with his loving family by his side.

Henry was born and raised in Lewiston, graduating from Lewiston High School in 1952. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard and after four years of service, attended Portland Junior College, receiving an associate’s degree in business. He later attended the University of Maine in Orono, earning a bachelor’s degree in education.

He went on to work for Boeing Airplane Division in Seattle, Wash., working in human services, and was later transferred to their helicopter division in Norton, Pa. He was later hired by RCA as a field recruiter in Pennsylvania. While visiting Maine, he accepted a position with AVCO Corp. at the Job Corps Center in Poland Spring. A few years later, he was offered a position as executive director for the Lewiston-Auburn United Way. After five years there, he became an educator at Monmouth Academy, then moved on to Leavitt Area High School, teaching and supervising the co-op educational program for 17 years, until he retired in 1993.

Hank enjoyed many summer days at his family camp in Monmouth. He also enjoyed skiing, garage sales, refinishing old trunks and antique furniture, and the game of golf that he loved so much, which he played in Florida and Maine with great friends. He especially enjoyed retirement years in Florida with friends and family. Most of all, he enjoyed watching his children grow into such wonderful people. He was one who passionately believed in the future for young adults, and was deeply committed to setting them on the right path with his work-study programs.

He will lovingly be remembered as a caring husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, a former Waterville resident, Betty (Bosse) Filliettaz of Hampden; two daughters, Karen Perry of Hampden, and Susan Chaitin and husband, Eric, of Fennville, Mich.; one son, Charles M. Filliettaz II and wife, Holland Gamble, of New Canaan, Conn.; one sister, Joan M. Lynch of Lewiston; one brother, Richard B. Filliettaz and wife, Sylvia, of Cape Neddick; as well as a brother-in-law, Maurice Bosse, of Cape Cod. Also surviving are three grandsons, Brennan and Connor Perry of Hampden, and Henry L. Filliettaz III of New Canaan, Conn.; three granddaughters, Mallory and Mackenzie Dow of Fennville, Mich., and Blakely Filliettaz of New Canaan, Conn.; and nieces and nephews. Henry is also survived by longtime close friends, Jerry and Jackie LaPlante of Auburn.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Daniel; two sisters, Betty Crowley and Claire Filliettaz; one brother-in-law, Paul Lynch; and a special aunt, Louise Conley.
