AUGUSTA– The Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine will present “Transgender Maine,” an exhibit focusing on Maine people who identify as transgender, those who support and advocate for them, and the efforts in Maine to get equal rights and recognition for the needs and health of transgender people.

The exhibit will run from Thursday, Sept. 24, through Friday, Dec.  18, at the Michael Klahr Center on the campus of the University of Maine at Augusta, 46 University Drive, Augusta. Exhibit hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or by appointment on weekends and evenings.

“Transgender Maine” will feature stories of transgender individuals, as well as some of the history of the issues relating to gender in Maine. HHRC Program Director David Greenham has led the process of research and partnered with more than 50 groups and individuals. Through photos, film, audio recordings, documents, and artifacts, the HHRC has created an educational and informative exhibit.

There will be an opening event on Thursday, Sept.24, from 5 to 7 p.m. with a brief presentation beginning at 5:30 p.m. featuring a short film and speakers. In conjunction with “Transgender Maine,” the HHRC will also host its third annual Pride Film Festival beginning on Oct. 8, for four consecutive Thursday evenings. The HHRC will host an event commemorating the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance on Friday, Nov. 20 at the Klahr Center. The event will begin at noon with a free lunch and learn, followed by a ceremony and reading of the names of those transgender individuals who have been killed in the U.S. during 2015. To date the list totals over 20 individuals.
