CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Olympic gold medalist Seth Wescott is training for more gold, but he’s also preparing for life after competition.
Wescott is joining Winterstick Snowboards’ ownership group. The company plans to open a custom snowboard manufacturing shop at Sugarloaf Mountain in Carrabassett Valley, where the 39-year-old lives. He’ll help design and manufacture the boards.
Winterstick will remodel an old barn on West Mountain at Sugarloaf for the shop, which will serve as the company’s headquarters, according to a statement by the company. The boards will feature Maine-sourced lumber, while the facility will use rooftop solar panels to help supply energy.
“The opportunity to be an owner of a snowboarding company has been a lifelong goal of mine and to do so with Winterstick is an absolute dream come true,” Wescott said in a prepared statement.
Wescott won gold medals at the 2006 and 2010 Olympics, but was sidelined during the Sochi Olympics in 2014. He took the 2014-15 season off to recover from a knee injury and the death of his father. But he plans to compete in the World Cup circuit this winter.
