MEXICO — Nearly 300 students and their parents attended an open house and community fair at Meroby Elementary School on Wednesday evening.
It was Kim Fuller’s first open house since being unanimously appointed interim principal on Sept. 15.
The community fair was a first for Meroby, Fuller said.
“For the first time, our school is having a community fair in the gymnasium. It’s a good way to get people well-versed in what’s going on in our community,” she said.
The community organizations included local Boy and Girl Scouts, Safe Voices, River Valley Healthy Community Coalition and the Mexico Police Department.
By 5:30 p.m., more than 200 people were visiting classrooms and other areas of the school.
A majority of the students and their parents gathered in the library, where a book fair was held. Other students met in the music room, where the parents spoke with the music teacher while the kids experimented with the instruments.
Fuller said she’s looking forward to the school year.
“I’m very excited about the opportunity and to work with the students as the year gets underway,” she said.
She called her appointment a “new challenge.”
Fuller said she worked with former Principal Melanie Chasse for two weeks to prepare for the school year.
She has 27 years of teaching experience and is a longtime literacy specialist with a master’s degree. She will serve as interim principal for a year while the district searches for a new principal.
