LIVERMORE FALLS — Livermore Falls officials agree that an abandoned building at 22 Gagnon St., now owned by the town, is a safety hazard.

“There’s been a lot of traffic in and out of that building,” Town Manager Kristal Flagg said at Tuesday’s selectmen meeting. “It needs to go.”

Acadia Contractors LLC of Turner estimated it would cost $14,500 for asbestos abatement, she said. The town allocated $25,000 to remove asbestos and have the building torn down.

Flagg said she had asked about burning the building. Fire Chief Tim “TD” Hardy responded that conditions would have to be perfect in order to do it.

“The other thing you’d have to do before that is abate the lead,” he said.

Selectmen voted 5-0 to let Acadia Contractors complete the asbestos abatement for up to $14,500. The money will come out of town surplus.

In other business, Road Foreman Bill Nichols said the transfer station is being cleaned up.

“We’re probably two-thirds done with the compost pile,” he said.

Scrap metal is also being removed, Nichols said. He thought it would be a good investment for the town to own its own roll-off dumpster for scrap metal.

A concrete pad would need to be put in to support the roll-off, Nichols said.

By the beginning of October, yard and leaf waste will be accepted at the transfer station once again, he said.

“Once we’re done down there, everything is going to be seen,” Nichols said. “Our recycling has picked up with the memos and the signs.”

Selectmen approved a motion 5-0 to purchase a 50-yard roll-off for scrap metal. Nichols said that he would get quotes and find the best price for the roll-off.

In other business, the board accepted the resignations of Planning Board members Robin Beck and William Demaray, both of whom have taken new jobs. Selectmen noted that only three full members and one alternate were left on the board.

They made a motion to appoint Ronnalean Sanborn to the Planning Board for a three-year term and alternate Tim Fournier to a two-year term as full board members.

A two-year position and two alternate positions on the Planning Board are still available.
