FARMINGDALE, Maine (AP) — Police say a 49-year-old Maine man has been hospitalized after a random attack by a man using the Kennebec River Rail Trail.

The Kennebec Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1EXowcQ ) Michael McCabe of Gardiner was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta on Sunday after the 10 a.m. attack in Farmingdale.

Maine State Police Detective Scott Bryant says witnesses reported seeing one man assaulting the other on the trail. When they yelled at him to stop, they see he fled along the trail toward Hannaford in Gardiner.

McCabe told police he bumped the suspect by accident. Bryant says he then turned around and kicked McCabe, who hit his head on rocks.

A hospital spokesman says McCabe was treated and released.

Bryant says police are seeking help from the public in identifying the suspect.
