RUMFORD — Historical societies in Rumford and Mexico will kick off the fall meeting schedule with a museum tour in Sumner from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19.

Rumford Historical Society member Jane Peterson said the The Past Gas and Ancient Oil Petroleum Collectible Museum is at 380 Black Mountain Road in Sumner.

“Neither of our historical societies have been there before, so this is new for both of us,” she said. “However, to make sure that it was something worth checking out, I went to the museum ahead of time for a tour. It’s definitely a nice place.”

The museum is run by Tim and Sue Wallace and is filled with gas station memorabilia they have collected over the past 35 years.

“He’s a contractor looking toward retirement, and he’s been collecting and restoring gas station memorabilia for quite a long time,” Peterson said. “He has three buildings full of it.”

Peterson said typically, when both societies select a place to tour it’s geared “more toward the women in our group. With the museum in Sumner, it’s more of a guy thing. It should be interesting to everyone, but it’s definitely something that the men will enjoy.”

If the women aren’t interested in the museum, Peterson said, they can go down the road to the Wrinkle in Thyme Shop, which offers wool processing, dyeing, knitting and a yarn shop.

The tour is open to the public for $7.
