LIVERMORE FALLS — The Regional School Unit 73 board accepted the resignation of longtime assistant principal Wendy Moreau when they met Thursday night.
They also authorized Superintendent Kenneth Healey to sell the former Livermore Falls High School and 10.16 acres on which the school is located. The district will retain Griffin Field and other fields adjacent to the former school.
Moreau, the assistant principal of Livermore Elementary School, has filled in for various administrative positions as needed over the years, including as adult education director.
She will retire in December.
“She has been an enormous ally. I have so much respect for her,” Healey said. “She will be sorely missed.”
Healey said the school’s lawyers advised the district to sell the former high school. The town of Livermore Falls has declined to take ownership.
He said the district and the town are arranging to have the building appraised.
Although Healey said he is very supportive of the local Area Youth Sports organization taking over the school as they have indicated, should some organization or individual offer a substantial amount of money for the school, he would take it.
The building will be advertised in a variety of places.
The school was closed several years ago when students from the Livermore Falls area joined the Jay students at Spruce Mountain High School in Jay. The former RSU 36 and Jay School Department merged in 2011.
The district is continuing its search for a new business manager to replace Stacie Field, who left this week for a similar position in RSU 16, Healey said advertisements for candidates will be expanded.
Adult Education Director Robyn Raymond said a resource fair, scheduled for Nov. 10, will serve as a response to the recently announced layoffs at Verso Paper Co. The firm said about 300 positions will be eliminated by the end of the year.
In other matters, Buildings, Grounds and Transportation Director Ken Vining said progress on installing an elevator at SMHS is going very slowly. Although the shaft is complete, he said the elevator will not arrive until at least November. However, most of the bleachers at Griffin Field have been installed, he said.
