BANGOR — A nonprofit organization in Maine says its Meals On Wheels program is running out of money and is asking the public to help make up a $55,000 deficit.
WCSH-TV reports about 3,000 people rely on the Eastern Area Agency on Aging to provide them with meals. The agency serves about 13,000 square miles in Maine.
Program officials say they have twice as many people on the program this year compared to this time last year — about 50 people more than they can afford. No new customers are being added and officials say they hope the deficit is resolved before they have to start removing people from the program.
The program is asking the public to sponsor a senior at a cost of about $86 a month.
