1927 – 2015

FARMINGTON — Marshall H. Longway, 88, of Hall Hill Road, Rumford, died Tuesday, Aug. 25, at Sandy River Health Care in Farmington, after a brief stay, with his daughters, Brenda and Marsha, by his side.

He was born in Rumford, on Feb. 19, 1927, a son of James and Edith (Smith) Longway Sr. Marshall graduated from Stephens High School in Rumford, Class of 1945 and had attended the University of Maine at Orono in the engineering program.

Marshall served with the U.S. Army as a corporal, 346th Engineer General Service Regiment from 1946 to 1947. He worked in the maintenance department at the Rumford Mill for many years, until his retirement from Boise Cascade Paper Co.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association, where he was an NRA safety instructor. He was also a registered Maine Guide, a well-known licensed surveyor and a Boy Scout leader for Troop 593 for over 30 years. Marshall was very active on the district and council level of the Boy Scouts, and received the District Award of Merit, the Silver Beaver Award at the council level and a Vigil Honor Member of the Order of the Arrow. He had his Wood Badge leadership training at Schiff Scout Reservation in New Jersey. He also received leadership training at Philmont Scout Reservation, Cimarron, N.M.

He was an avid golfer and had held memberships at Oakdale Country Club, Paris Hill Country Club and the Norway Country Club. He enjoyed all outdoor activities, especially golfing, hunting and fishing. He was instrumental in the construction and creation of the ski lift at Black Mountain as an active member of the Chisholm Ski Club. He had held memberships at the American Legion Post 24 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He especially enjoyed being a longtime volunteer at his daughter’s animal shelter with the title of vice president of maintenance and grounds.

Survivors include four daughters, Marsha McKenna and Brenda Longway of Rumford, and twins, Sherry McLaughlin of Auburn and Shelly Brady of Jacksonville, Fla.; a son, Stuart Longway of Mexico; three grandchildren, Stephanie, Jessica and Joshua; and four great-grandchildren, Desmond, Ashton, Phoenix and Charisma.

He was predeceased by his parents; and a brother, James Earl Longway Jr.
