PORTLAND (AP) — Maine’s annual bear hunting season is beginning soon while other fall hunting seasons are drawing near.

The season for hunting bears with bait begins on Aug. 31. Bait is by far the most popular method for hunting bears. Hunters started laying bait in the woods on Aug. 1. The season for hunting bears with dogs doesn’t start until mid-September.

The start of the bear season is followed the expanded archery season for deer, which starts Sept. 12. Moose hunting starts near the end of the month in some parts of the state.

The fall hunting seasons are starting as summer hunts are ending. The night hunt for coyotes ends on Aug. 31.
