RUMFORD – Every Rumford Elementary School student will receive a free backpack full of school supplies when they return to class Sept. 1, Principal Chris Decker said.
Ruth’s Reusable Resources of Portland is offering backpacks filled with supplies to Maine schools that are “members” of the nonprofit organization, he said.
“Ruth’s Reusables gets donations from businesses in the Portland area The backpacks were put together with volunteers from the UNUM Corporation,” Decker said.
The company website said that over the past four years, UNUM employees have volunteered their time to participate in back-to-school supply drives and to pack backpacks with school supplies to give to students.
Decker also announced that Rumford Elementary School will hold its annual open house and ice cream social Friday, Aug. 28. Kindergarten students will be able to attend the open house from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and have the chance to take a bus ride throughout town to acclimate them to a regular school day.
The open house for students in first through fifth grade will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed by a 6:45 p.m. presentation on the school’s new report cards.
