AUBURN — The family of Roger Gagnon identified him Monday as the man who fell Friday afternoon from a bridge on Main Street.

According to Nancy Gagnon, Roger’s sister, he lives on Goff Street in Auburn and was walking to New Auburn to visit a friend when he suffered a stroke, fell over the bridge railing and landed on a paved path in Bonney Park below the bridge.

Roger Gagnon, 56, suffered a large gash on his head and was bleeding from the ears when he was found by a local family who had been walking across the park to get an ice cream. When he was found, Gagnon was unconscious and taken to Central Maine Medical Center, where he was initially treated in the intensive care unit, according to his sister.

Nancy Gagnon said Monday that her brother is now awake and alert, and is listed in stable condition at the Lewiston hospital.

Auburn police declined to release Gagnon’s name Friday because the case remained under investigation. It wasn’t clear at the time how the man had been injured.
