PITTSTON (AP) — Maine State Police say a landlord was stabbed to death in the chest after a confrontation with a tenant at a historic mansion he and his wife ran as a boarding home.

Police say 51-year-old Dale Clifford was killed Saturday evening in East Pittston.

Officials say Clifford died as he was en route to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.

The tenant’s girlfriend reportedly said Sunday that he stabbed the landlord with a pocket knife in self-defense.

But police told the Kennebec Journal that specifics of the incident are still under investigation and they have not identified the tenant as the culprit.

The boarding home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was built in 1890.

Police say they are investigating Clifford’s death. No charges have been filed.
