LIVERMORE — The Board of Selectmen this week set the tax rate at $16 per thousand dollars of assessed property value, an increase of $1.70 from 2014-15.

The new rate means a property valued at $100,000 will pay $170 more this fiscal year, which began July 1.

The board was told an error occurred when calculating last year’s tax rate of $14.30. A total of $1.17 million in municipal appropriations was left out of what should have been raised through taxes last year, Administrative Assistant Carrie Castonguay said.

“In looking at the year, we didn’t do that bad, all things considered. We were very conservative,” she said.

“There are four areas we have no control over,” Treasurer Amy Byron said.

County taxes increased this year, along with the Regional School Unit 73 assessment. State revenue-sharing decreased and the Memorial Forest settlement for illegal tree-cutting is no longer available.

County taxes and the RSU 73 assessment account for more than $2 million of the $3.13 million to be raised through taxes in 2015-16.
