LEWISTON — Hugh “Butch” Howes, 68, died peacefully, surrounded by family, Friday, July 31, at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston after a courageous battle with ALS.
Butch was born in Washington, D.C., the son of Hugh and Pauline (Norris) Groves. He graduated from Weymouth Vocational Technical School and went on to serve his country in the U.S. Navy, where he retired after 20 years.
In 1985, Butch married Becky (Sampson) Deschaines, and they resided together in both Turner and Winter Haven, Fla.
Butch was an avid golfer and a big fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots.
He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Becky Howes; his daughters, Hillarie Howes, and Laura Desrosiers and her husband, Shawn; stepson, Timothy Deschaines and his wife, Jessica; his brother, David Howes and his wife, Patricia; his sister, Kathy Jewett and her husband, Ike; half-sisters, Sheryl Groves, Lorie Hufstedler and her husband, John, and Lisa Schafer; granddaughters, Autumn and Katelyn Desrosiers; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father, Hugh Groves; and his parents, Pauline and Harold Howes.
