FARMINGTON — The Maine Department of Transportation has some flashing pedestrian crossing lights available for free, Town Manager Richard Davis told the Board of Selectmen on Tuesday.

The solar-powered lights are similar to the flashing crosswalk lights used on Main Street at the University of Maine at Farmington, he said. They are quite expensive.

If the town receives any, officials would like to put in a pair at the crosswalk from the post office to Dunkin’ Donuts on Main Street in the downtown area, he said. There have been quite a few close calls because drivers neglect to stop or don’t see pedestrians waiting for the crosswalk, he said.

The town would be responsible for cement bases for the lights and any future maintenance.

The board expressed an interest in getting a second set and putting one at the crosswalk between Hippach Field and Gifford’s Ice Cream on the intervale.

Davis will check to see if more than one set can be obtained.
