AUBURN — After more than five decades of providing legal services in Maine and Androscoggin County, Curtis Webber will be retiring on Aug. 1.
He will remain of counsel with Linnell, Choate & Webber, LLP — the firm where he began his legal career. He served as a mentor to many LCW attorneys through the years — a role he will continue as counsel with the firm.
Webber was born in Lewiston on Aug. 29, 1933. He was educated at Bowdoin College, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1955, and Harvard Law School, graduating in 1958 (L.L.B). He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
He enjoyed an accomplished legal career, with a focus on municipal law and employment law. He devoted much of his law practice to representing workers who brought claims of discrimination in their employment conditions based on such things as race, nationality or disability. He has also represented a number of towns in the central Maine area. He served as a member and chairman of the Professional Ethics Commission and as chairman of the Board of Overseers of the Bar. He also served as president of the Androscoggin Bar Association and as a director of a number of other professional and civic organizations.
He was admitted to practice before the Maine and Federal Bar in 1958 and before the United States Supreme Court in 1968. He has appeared frequently before the Maine Supreme Court and has argued appeals in the First Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston and the U.S. Supreme Court.
In 2008, he was recognized by the Disability Rights Center of Maine as the Lawyer of the Year. He has also been recognized by the Maine Employment Lawyers Association and the Regional Organization of Municipal Attorneys for his leadership roles.
He and his wife live in Auburn.
