The touted newcomer is on top at the Maine Women’s Amateur golf tournament, but two past champions and an additional member of the home club are lurking.

Staci Creech of Bangor Municipal shot a 3-over 75 to take the first-round lead at Biddeford-Saco Country Club,

Creech, who finished third at the recent New England women’s amateur, leads Biddeford-Saco’s Ruth Colucci by one shot.

And there is plenty of potential in the four-way tie for third at 78.

Two-time winner Enily Bouchard, also of Biddeford-Saco, is in that group along with defending champion Leslie Guenther of Norway.

Also at 6-over and three shots off the pace are Melissa Johnson of Auburn’s Martindale CC and Bailey Plourde of Samoset Resort.

The 54-hole tournament continues Tuesday and concludes Wednesday.
