MEXICO — While more than 100 Regional School Unit 10 students were participating in a huge variety of summer activities at Mountain Valley Middle School this week, the lunch ladies were making sure that everyone had a healthy breakfast and lunch.
From July 6 through July 30, any student from RSU 10 can not only have fun with robotics, art, technology or any of the many other activities offered, but can also receive a healthy breakfast and lunch, thanks to a grant and the hard work of nutrition workers Linda White, Elaine Blodgett and Cindy Touchette.
Barbara Radmore, coordinator of the Western Foothills Kids Association, which includes the after-school program during the school year and the summer program, said more than 100 breakfasts and nearly 200 lunches are served each day during the six weeks of the activity-laden summer program.
Funding comes from a federal 21st Century Grant.
RSU 10 also recently learned that during the upcoming school year, all children attending schools in the Mountain Valley Region — Pennacook Learning Center, Rumford Elementary School, Meroby Elementary School and Mountain Valley middle and high schools — will begin receiving free lunches because of federal income guidelines.
All children in the Mountain Valley region, as well as in the Dirigo and Nezinscot regions, will continue to receive free breakfasts when school resumes in September. Free and reduced lunches will also continue in the schools of the Dirigo and Nezinscot regions for those who meet income qualifications.
