RUMFORD — The newly formed church, Lion of Judah Ministries, will celebrate its first month by hosting a family-friendly get-together from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 25, at Hosmer Field, said Linda Brown,  co-creator and pastor of the church.

Brown, who has spent her entire life doing work for different churches, said that the church is only four weeks old, but has slowly begun to grow as more people learn about it.

“I’ve been ordained for 14 years, have taught Sunday School for 25 years, and have served in many leadership positions as a pastor,” Brown said. “I went to Bible college and have been serving the Lord since I was young.”

While a majority of her life has been dedicated to doing work for church, Brown said that she decided to start her own church after meeting a Rumford woman at a prayer group.

“We both shared an incredible love for God, and decided that we wanted to start our own church,” Brown said. “It just so happened that she lived in Rumford, and there’s a tremendous need over there. We saw it as an opportunity to connect with people who need a fresh new beginning in their lives. It’s a brand new endeavor for us.”

The church is located at 26 Oxford Ave., known in the area as the former Time Warner Cable building.

Brown said the family-friendly event will be led by churchgoers and will feature music throughout the afternoon.

“There’s going to be lots of fun activities and games for children to do,” Brown said. “The older people will probably be more interested in the music, but we tried to find stuff that would veer toward young people and small children.”
