HELLO SUN SPOTS: The Auburn Public Library is preparing a grant application to bring a NASA-based exhibit to the Library next year, “From Our Town to Outer Space.” In order to apply for the grant we need to plan a number of programs. One idea that we have is to look back on our area’s history with respect to the aerospace industry. We thought it would be interesting to have a program based on the AT&T Telstar Earth Station that was located in Andover. We would like to speak with former employees about their time there and have them bring an historical perspective to the exhibit. Those interested should contact Mamie Anthoine Ney, director, at 207-333-6640 ext. 2020 or email@auburnpubliclibrary.org.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: LA Arts is seeking artists and volunteers to participate in its art walks held on the last Friday of each month in various venues on downtown Lisbon Street. Volunteers are needed to assist with the event by hosting galleries, setting and cleaning up, and helping to curate spaces. Artists should contact us to find out where their art can be displayed or where they can perform. Our next art walk will be Friday, July 31. For more information, email mail@laarts.org or call José at 207-782-7228.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am having a problem with Lily of the Valley plants. They are taking over my flower bed, killing other plants. How do I get rid of them? — No Name in Rumford.
ANSWER: The most common answer to this question is that you will need to dig up and dispose of the plants as they spread through both their roots and seeds. Another suggestion is to cover the plants with plastic or some type of non-porous covering and mulch for six months or so. There are toxic chemicals that can be sprayed on the plants to kill them but then those toxins remain in the soil.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: When the U.S. Women’s Soccer team won the title, all of America was overjoyed, and the ticker tape parade was watched by all.
