FARMINGTON – A Canaan man died and a Mercer man was injured Sunday afternoon when the vehicle they were riding in rolled over into trees on Beaudry Road in Kibby Township, Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr. said in a news release Monday.

Marc Swain, 20, of Canaan, the driver of the 1999 Ford Explorer, received major head trauma in the crash and died enroute to a landing area for a LifeFlight medical helicopter, Nichols said.

His passenger, Corey Moorehead, 19, of Mercer was treated at the scene and released.

It appears that Swain was operating south on the Beaudry Road, formerly known as Gold Brook Road, toward Route 27 at an unsafe speed for the dirt road and the vehicle, Nichols said.

Swain lost control and overcorrected when the vehicle began to fishtail, and was completely sideways when the vehicle hit several alders and rolled over. Neither Swain or Moorehead were wearing seat belts. Swain’s head struck the vehicle as it rolled over, according to Nichols.

“Speed and alcohol are considered factors in this crash,” Nichols said.

Representatives of the Maine Forest Service and U.S. Border Patrol assisted. Franklin County Deputy Kevin Hartley assisted with reconstruction of the accident scene.
